Center for By-Products Utilization
CBU is a University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Research Center
CBU has historically studied beneficial uses of a wide variety of by-products in construction and other applications.
Steel Slag Agg
Steel slag aggregates are by-product of production of steel.
Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) gypsum is a by-product of coal-burning power plants. This image shows FGD gypsum imaged seen through a scanning electron microscope.
fly ash in concrete
Fly ash is a by-product of burning coal in power plants. It has wide uses as supplementary cementitious material in concrete.
Beneficial use of various industrial by-products are studied at CBU.
New CBU Lab Coming Soon
A new 3000-sf laboratory facility will soon be complete. This laboratory will be housed inside UWM's USR Building. CBU's Asphalt Laboratory will be the first operational unit within this laboratory.
New CBU Research
We have begun work on a major new study on use of fly ash in asphalt pavements ("ASHphalt"). This project is sponsored by the Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI). Stay tuned to this site for further updates.
